Understanding the System
Talent in TCI has never been the issue. Turning that talent into sustained high performance has.
A Functioning Sport Ecosystem
Behind every athlete who reaches the highest levels of competition is a network of people, institutions, and resources working together. We call this the sport ecosystem.
When the ecosystem functions well, athletes develop along a clear pathway, families receive the guidance they need, coaches operate within defined standards, and national governing bodies are aligned with shared goals. When it breaks down, the costs are high: athlete burnout, misaligned expectations, wasted investment, and lost potential.
The 2026 Symposium exists to strengthen every part of that ecosystem, together. When systems align, athletes progress — every stakeholder, every action, every time.

The Six-Level Athlete Development Pathway
A clear and progressive pathway designed to support athletes at every stage of their sporting journey — from early participation and development through competitive and high-performance sport.
The starting point for an athlete’s journey, focused on introducing young people to sport, building fundamental movement skills, and developing a positive and lasting connection with physical activity.
Athletes begin to develop sport-specific skills, confidence, discipline, and physical capabilities through structured training, coaching, and regular participation.
Athletes progress into more structured competition, refining their technical abilities, understanding performance demands, and building the experience needed to compete at a higher level.
A focused stage of athlete development that combines advanced coaching, physical preparation, sports science, and performance support to help athletes reach their full potential.
Athletes competing at a high level receive enhanced training, specialist support, and performance resources designed to prepare them for national, regional, and international competition.
The highest stage of the pathway, supporting athletes who are pursuing elite and international competition while providing the environment, expertise, and resources needed to perform at their highest level.
Stakeholder Roles and Responsibilities
Athlete development is a shared responsibility. Every part of the sporting ecosystem has an important role in creating the support, opportunities, and environment athletes need to progress.
Athletes
Athletes are at the centre of the pathway. They are responsible for committing to their development, maintaining discipline, embracing coaching, and taking an active role in their performance, wellbeing, and long-term sporting journey.
Parents & Families
Parents and families provide essential encouragement, stability, and support throughout an athlete’s journey. They help athletes stay motivated, make informed decisions, and maintain a healthy balance between sport, education, and personal development.
Coaches & Technical Staff
Coaches and technical staff guide athletes through each stage of development. They provide quality training, technical expertise, performance guidance, and a safe environment that supports both athletic and personal growth.
Schools & Institutions
Schools and educational institutions help create opportunities for young people to participate in sport while supporting the balance between education and athletic development. They play an important role in identifying talent and connecting athletes with appropriate pathways.
National Federations
National Federations help establish and support structured development pathways within their respective sports. They provide competition opportunities, technical standards, coaching structures, athlete development programmes, and progression opportunities at national and international levels.
Sports Commission & Government
The Sports Commission and Government provide leadership, policy direction, resources, and strategic support for the national sporting system. Their role is to help create an environment where athletes, coaches, and sporting organisations can develop and succeed.
Overview of the NADP
The National Athlete Development Programme (NADP) provides a structured and coordinated approach to supporting athletes throughout their development journey.
Designed to create clear pathways from participation and early development through to high performance and international competition, the programme brings together athletes, parents, coaches, schools, national federations, and key sporting institutions.
The NADP focuses on creating the right environment for athletes to develop their skills, reach their potential, and access appropriate coaching, competition, education, wellbeing, and performance support at every stage of their journey.
Through a shared national approach, the programme aims to strengthen the sporting ecosystem and build a sustainable pathway that supports the development of future athletes and high-performance success.
